Masjid al-Haram at night

First-time Umrah

Never been for Umrah before?

We'll help you understand what to expect — from your flight to your return home. No assumed knowledge, no jargon.

The journey

Seven stages, start to finish.

01

Before you go

Your passport, visa arrangements and any vaccinations should be settled well ahead. Pack light, breathable clothing, comfortable sandals you can walk in, and unscented toiletries for the days in ihram. Read through the rites once or twice at home — it is far easier to absorb calmly than in the moment.

  • Passport and visa
  • Comfortable footwear
  • Unscented toiletries
  • Learn the rites at home
02

Flying to Saudi Arabia

Most travellers from the United States fly into Jeddah, with some routings landing in Madinah instead. If you are entering ihram before landing, you'll change and make your intention before crossing the miqat — cabin crew on Umrah routes usually announce it.

  • Jeddah or Madinah arrival
  • Ihram before the miqat
  • Transfer arranged in advance
03

Arriving in Makkah

Your transfer takes you from the airport to your hotel. Rest, drink water, and go to the Haram when you feel steady. The first sight of the Kaaba is something most people prefer to meet unhurried rather than exhausted.

  • Hotel check-in
  • Rest and hydrate
  • First visit to the Haram
04

Performing Umrah

Tawaf around the Kaaba, then sa'i between Safa and Marwah, then halq or taqsir to leave the state of ihram. The Haram is crowded at some hours and quiet at others; going slightly outside peak prayer times makes a real difference, especially for older travellers.

  • Tawaf
  • Sa'i
  • Halq or taqsir
  • Choose a calmer hour
05

Madinah

Madinah moves at a gentler pace. Most hotels in the central area sit within a short walk of Masjid an-Nabawi, so days settle into prayer, rest and short walks. Many travellers find it the most restful part of the journey.

  • Masjid an-Nabawi
  • Central hotel areas
  • A slower rhythm
06

Ziyarah

Historic sites around both cities — Quba, Uhud, Qiblatain near Madinah; Jabal al-Nour and the Hajj sites near Makkah. Half a day is usually plenty. Don't overfill your schedule; the days are warm and the walking adds up.

  • Half-day tours
  • Private or shared
  • Pace yourself
07

Going home

Allow generous time for the airport, particularly in peak season. Zamzam water is usually handled separately from your checked luggage — we'll tell you how it works for your routing.

  • Extra time at the airport
  • Zamzam allowance
  • Transfer back

Common worries

What first-time travellers ask us.

Ten to fourteen days suits most first-time travellers from the United States. It allows time to recover from the flight, spend unhurried days in both cities, and still fit in Ziyarah without rushing.
